Once upon a Nightwish
Before I started writing, I quickly glanced through the playlist in iTunes. Sincerely, it’s not that easy to find Nightwish in present list, but when Larey mentioned something about this letter, I was still willing to squeeze time from tight schedule to walk through the way I’ve passed by before, just like meeting with a long-lost friend.
I dare to say that I’m an old fan of Nightwish because these melodies have accompanied me since I was in high school, while sometimes I don’t dare to say so because this band has existed for 21 years, much longer than the years for which I’ve known it. Before my first listening to The Escapist, I was overwhelmed by negative emotion, depressed and gloomy. Though this song has lyrics like “a nightingale in a golden cage”, I could still grasp the feeling of pursuing the dawn, the brightness, the freedom. With digging deeper, I found these goods, which greatly inspired a negative high school student, were everywhere in Nightwish’s works.
During these years, we fans gathered together, expressing the passion with each other that could rarely be shared with others around us. Then with time went by, some have new lives, new social network, Nightwish vanished from conversations unavoidably. Larey had steady job, Gretchen came to UK for further study, while I traveled across Pacific Ocean to US to pursue master’s degree. Those passions were narrowed down gradually, and dispersed to different continents.
But my purpose is not regretting the lost of passion. Everything changes constantly in the world, nobody has ability or endless energy to keep surroundings to be always the same as before. Actually we still keep contact with each other after these years, and have been benefited significantly by Nightwish. Youth is ephemeral, world is vicissitudinous, while there’re always something that are worthwhile for us to cherish.
Nightwish also has experienced several personnel changes. Every leaving is together with fans’ memory and nostalgia, and every new member’s coming is together with many possibilities in the future.
Life should be continued, so is our beloved Nightwish.
